My wife and I take care of my father, and while we were getting closer to her due date, we booked a stay at respite at Gorge care. I was super reluctant because of the reviews I read on here… We literally had no options because my wife’s water broke 6 weeks early and we were stuck with this only option. We were stuck in BC women’s NICU for weeks and I checked in with my father often. He’s a bit stubborn, so getting a real review from him is often difficult. He doesn’t complain about a ton.
My father in law dropped my dad off and told me from the start they greeted him with specialists, nurses, doctors, and had all his medication waiting with a welcome pack for him. So far this was a great sign.
We’re finally back from the NICU, and I came to pick him up today only to be met with a fantastic staff who were almost at tears my dad was leaving today. He received many hugs, said bye to friends he had met, and even several requests to come back and visit if he could.
I was reluctant at first to leave this review but after hearing my dad glow about the care he received, and speaking with all the staff, these folks don’t get enough credit. In his experience and mine, they went above and beyond to make him feel welcome, and he thoroughly enjoyed his stay. I’m truly surprised reading some of the other experiences people had? I wonder if they’re even talking about the same staff or location. Lovely room, with view, spacious, and accommodating. Lots of activities and things to do. He even had friends visit a few times. His only complaint was not a great menu, but he had access to food delivery also.
These folks really helped put our minds at ease and I’m so thankful to everyone there who made my dads visit such a pleasant one.

My husband was in the Waterview unit for a month before he passed away in early July. My son and I can not say enough about how much we appreciate the kind and caring staff, a room that met all his needs and the support we received from the staff on the floor and at the front desk. His death and viewing was handled with so much dignity and care. Thanks to all who helped make a very difficult time for us better because of you who treated him and us so well.

My mother has been on a respite stay at the Gorge Hospital. I visited her most days as was upset about being away from home - probably 10 times in all. I became more uneasy as her stay continued. There seemed to be very little interaction between staff and patients. It may well be that the facility is understaffed, but that is no excuse for the lack of care that my mother received when she became ill. After a few days, I wanted to know if patients had been tested for c. difficile. The nurse I spoke to refused, at first, to answer the question - apparently "privacy" was the issue - then told me that my mother did not have "c. difficile" and hung up on me.

Super disappointing. My grandmother is in gorge road waiting for a permanent space. Today is her 90th birthday. And I’ve been trying all day to call in and talk to her. But the nurses refuse to put me through to her. Makes me question what other care needs the nurses are failing to provide to my grandma. Short staffed or not, there’s absolutely no reason for negligence.

The worst facility I have ever been to.
1) phyllis the occupational therapist describes people by their race. ex " the ORIENTAL man can help you" Who even says oriental? "Ash, my indian assitant"... It's vile and disgusting. Why is race needed to describe someone, if you tell me to find "Ash" I'll just ask for him by name, as any decent person would. Phyllis is a deplorable excuse for an occupational therapist and should retire immediately.
2) The unit clerk is rude and ineffective. When my husband asked him where we could find a nurse he said "here, at the nursing station"... there wasn't a nurse there, obviously. When we said we'd like to speak to an RN immediately as my mother was cool and clamy he said "immediately doesn't happen here"
3) The staff is inconsistent, my mother has had a different care aide every day for the last 11 days. And every day she has had crust in her eyes and food on her mouth when I get there.
Our healthcare system may be overwhelmed but there's no reason for the nonsense we've experienced there. Disgusted with everything about Gorge rd Hospital!
*Edited to reply, We've spoken to Donna twice, she's aware. She is apparently quite comfortable with the lack of care in her facility. Phyllis r-equires immediate HR training, and I hope that is addressed !

**Edited again 2018-08-14 I received an email saying the response to my review had been updated, I don't notice a change. My husband and my sister spoke with Donna separately and are convinced she could not care less regarding the safety of her residents nor the language of her staff. I have made this review using an alias as I fear my speaking out will further impact the care my mother receives.
