Food is good and fresh but not dirt cheap like the sign suggests. Pre-made burritos and salads are good
On the pricy side. Expensive to buy food here but convenient location to grab groceries after work

The Root Cellar has some excellent produce with some good specials but regular prices are high. There are two issues that it would be good for them to improve on.
1. Handling produce at the checkout. Some of the cashiers do a good job but too often, after carefully choosing unbruised fruit or vegetables, the cashier will drop them on to the scale! Do they have no idea about not bruising fruit?
2. Check your receipt before you leave. Again today I bought an item that was on sale, but the price it rung up was not the sale price. Now I've got to go back to get a refund. This issue is not the cashier's problem - it's the store manager putting in the wrong price. How many people have paid above the sale price but didn't check their receipt?

Ben the Butcher at Root Cellar Cook Street consistently keeps my business in order. He’s a big reason people love the food I cook at my restaurant. His work ethic is hard to come by. I’ve dealt with quite a few butchers around town and have finally found one that listens and truly cares about my needs for business. Highly recommend, Root Cellar is lucky to have him.

Honestly, I was excited to have the Root Cellar come to Cook Street Village because I used to live by another location that had some good deals (occasionally). But other than the very nice staff members, this store isn't somewhere I want to shop because the mark-up on the prices is insane. I walked past the store recently and one regular sized package of strawberries was $9.99...Surely the owners understand that this is just not right. Do better.

I've shopped at the Root Cellar for quite a few years, on Cook and on MacKenzie. I've not had a problem with staff or their produce bags until today. Twice, as I was putting in one little container of strawberries, the bag broke, and another bag broke while I put a few pieces of corn in. When I raised this with the employee in produce, he was not interested in the least, and only said "it never happened before". Well, it happened now, so I'm bringing it to your attention I thought. Obviously an unmotivated under appreciated person who is disgruntled at having to work there.
Hoping for a more engaged and interested employee, I flagged it for the check out clerk as I was paying. She said "well, you don't have to use them then". To which I said: what are the bags there for then, if not to use?". Her tone was unkind and I felt picked on, as though I had done something wrong, when the problem is with the quality of the bags.
Both employees, were so fragile that I felt I wasn't allowed to say anything. Memo to the staff: no one is blaming you personally when a customer flags a concern for you. Your response should be "I'm sorry that happened, I'll let our store manager know". There is obviously something wrong with this batch of produce bags - they were about as strong as tissue paper.
So well done, Root Cellar for not training your staff in customer relations or how to respond to a customer when they bring a concern to their attention. It doesn't look good for them and it certainly is a poor reflection on your business. There was a time, when the Root Cellar hired a more motivated, kinder group of people, who had knowledge about a product when asked a question. These kids that work there now couldn't care less and it unfortunately shows.
By the way, well done Root Cellar for evicting a family above you. Your store is not welcome in our neighbourhood anymore.
